To add products to your store, it is advisable to create categories for the products. This will make it easier for your visitors to find products of a particular kind in your store. It may be that you only have one type of product, in this case a single category would suffice. It may also be that you have several types of product that can also be divided into different groups. In this event you could create several categories that could each have a number of subcategories. It is possible to divide your products into as many categories and subcategories as you require.

Within the Categories screen, you have the following options:

Add Category

This option allows you to add a category for products. To create a category select the Add Category option, you will then be prompted to enter a name for your new ‘supercategory’. The category is defined as a supercategory as it will be a category that subcategories would fall under if created. After entering the name of category when prompted, it will be displayed in the list of created categories.

Adding Subcategories

Once you have created categories for your products it is then possible to divide these into smaller subcategories. This lends to the ease of shop navigation and makes it easier for your visitors to find what they are looking for.

To create a subcategory, select the category (supercategory) that the subcategory falls under and select Add Subcategory. After entering the desired name of the subcategory, the name will be displayed in the list of categories directly underneath the name of its supercategory.

If you already have products in a category, when you create a subcategory those products will become associated with the subcategory as opposed to the supercategory. This can pose a problem that is best illustrated with an example:

Clothes (Supercategory) -> Men’s T-Shirt, Women’s T-Shirt, Men’s Polo Shirt, Women’s Polo Shirt (Products)

If you then added the subcategory ‘Men’s’ then the example would look like this:

Clothes (Supercategory) -> Men’s (Subcategory) -> Men’s T-Shirt, Men’s Polo Shirt, Men's Trousers (Products)

If you then created a ‘Women’s’ Category, none of the women’s items would belong to this subcategory. This would have to be changed using the edit product option from the products menu.

To avoid this happening, try to pre-prepare and create subcategories before placing products into categories.

Edit Category

This option allows you to edit the name of a category. To do this, simply select the category you wish to edit and select the Edit Category option from the Category options. After changing the name when prompted, the newly named category will be displayed in the list of categories.

Delete Category

This option allows you to delete a category. To delete an category, select the category you wish to delete and select Delete Category from the Category options. You will then be asked if you are sure of the deletion you are about to make. Upon selecting ‘yes’, the category you selected for deletion will no longer be displayed in the list of your created categories.

Move Up

This option allows you to move a category up in the menu. To move a category up a place, select the category and select Move Up from the Category options. The category you selected will automatically be moved up in the list of categories.

Move Down

This option allows you to move a category down in the list of categories. To move an category down a place, select the category and select Move Down from the Category options. The category you selected will automatically be moved down in the list of categories.
